Jacksonville North Pulaski School District Encourages Families to Prioritize Water Safety
JACKSONVILLE, Ark. — As warmer weather approaches and families spend more time around pools, lakes, and rivers, the Jacksonville North Pulaski School District (JNPSD) is encouraging families to prioritize water safety and take advantage of local swimming education resources.
According to national safety data, learning to swim can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent, yet many Americans still lack basic swimming skills. In fact, 54 percent of Americans cannot swim well enough to save themselves, and half of adult Americans report they do not know how to swim. Water Safety
District leaders say increasing water safety awareness and encouraging swimming education are important steps in protecting children and families during the summer months.
“Water activities can be fun and a great way for families to spend time together, but it’s important to remember that safety always comes first,” said district officials. “By improving water competency—which includes swimming skills, water awareness, and knowing how to help others—we can help reduce the risk of drowning and keep our families safe.”
Several organizations offer educational materials and training opportunities related to water safety. National and state resources include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers National Water Safety Program, the American Red Cross Water Safety Program, and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Boater Education Program. Locally, families can also enroll children in swimming lessons through nearby community centers. Programs are available through the Jacksonville Community Center and the Cabot Veterans Park Community Center, which offer swim instruction and water safety education for children and families. District officials encourage parents to explore these opportunities and have conversations with their children about water safety before participating in summer water activities.
By working together with families and community partners, JNPSD hopes to promote safer water experiences and ensure that students can enjoy summer activities with confidence and preparedness.
For more information about water safety resources or swimming lessons in the area, families can contact their local community center or visit the organizations listed in the district’s water safety resource guide.
